Maha Amsterdam Presents: adidas Stan Smith

Some silhouettes don't need reinventing. They need the right frame. That's the idea behind our new in-store installation, where the Stan Smith — a shoe that has barely changed since 1971 for good reason — is placed inside the modular grid system of USM Haller. Two design languages, decades apart, built on the same principle: strip away the unnecessary, and let the structure speak.

USM Haller was developed in the late 1960s as furniture, but it has always behaved more like architecture. A system of chrome-plated tubes and panels, endlessly reconfigurable, built to outlast trend cycles. It's an apt frame for the Stan Smith, a shoe defined by the same restraint: clean leather upper, perforated three stripes, a single green heel tab doing all the talking. In the installation, the grid runs in milky white and green, echoing the Stan Smith's own palette. Everything else in the space is kept minimal, so the dialogue between object and system stays at the centre.

It's less a display than a proposition: that some designs are so resolved, they can hold their own next to a furniture classic, and stand as design objects in their own right. The installation is on view in-store until July 17. Come by and see it for yourself in-store.
